Clearing starts with deciding which trees stay.

How a clearing job runs

Decide what stays, then clear the rest.

Clearing cannot be undone. Once a big oak is down it is gone, so the plan comes before the saw.

  1. 01

    Walk the property

A licensed arborist looks at what is there: which trees are sound and worth keeping, which are dead, weak, or in the way, and what the ground is like.

  2. 02

    Mark the keepers

You decide what stays with the full picture in front of you, and the keepers are protected while the work goes on around them.

  3. 03

    Clear trees and brush

Trees come down, brush is cut back, and the wood and debris are handled the way the estimate lays out.

  4. 04

    Grind the stumps

Stumps ground below grade so the ground is ready for a slab, a fence, a garden, or whatever comes next.

Operations index

What lot and land clearing covers

An overgrown back lot, a build site, or a fence line that disappeared years ago, the job is the same: open the ground up without losing what is worth keeping.

  • Selective clearing

Thinning out the scrub and the weak trees while the healthy live oaks and other keepers stay standing.

  • Overgrown lots and brush

Volunteer trees, vines, and brush that have taken over an empty lot or the back of a property.

  • Fence and property lines

Trees and growth along a fence or boundary cleared back so the line can be seen, surveyed, or rebuilt.

  • Clearing for a build

Room made for a house pad, driveway, shop, or pond, with the trees you want to keep planned around from the start.

  • Stump grinding after clearing

Every stump left from the clearing ground out, so the site is usable, not half finished.

Clearing answers

Frequently asked questions about lot and land clearing

01 Do you clear a whole lot, or just some of the trees?

Either. Many jobs are selective: scrub, brush, and weak trees out, healthy oaks kept. Others clear the ground for a build. The walk-through settles which.

02 Can you save the big oaks?

Usually, if they are sound. A licensed arborist checks their health before anything comes down, and they are protected while the work goes on around them.

03 What happens to the stumps?

They are ground below grade so the ground can be used. If the plan calls for digging out root balls instead, Louisiana 811 has to be called at least two business days before any digging starts.

04 Do I need a permit to clear a lot in Lafayette?

For trees on a single-family home lot, we found no city permit requirement. The Lafayette Development Code's landscaping rules exempt single-family homes and apply when a building permit is issued for other projects. If the clearing is part of a development, check with Lafayette Consolidated Government's Planning and Development first.

05 What happens to the wood and brush?

Tell us what you want, whether that is everything hauled off or the firewood left in a pile, and it goes into the estimate.

06 Is the estimate free?

Yes. Estimates are free and carry no obligation, including the walk-through.
